5/19 6th Grade

Hello 6th Graders,

This week we will be exploring kitchen science to create art!

For thousands of years, people have used colors from nature to create art. Many plants have natural pigments, and the one in red cabbage is very special- it can change color when it is mixed with ingredients from your kitchen. In this activity you will use acids (like lemon juice) and bases (like baking soda) to turn red cabbage into homemade paints in an array of colors.

This week you will be creating a set of watercolor paints using red cabbage. To start watch the video below to see how cabbage is turned into paint.

Supplies:

-6 paint pots to hold paint (sent home in the last supply pick up)

-remaining red cabbage from your project with Lisa (this calls for half a cabbage, but use whatever you have left and decrease other ingredients if needed)

-kitchen tools (detailed list in document below)

-pantry items (detailed list in document below

Instructions:

Complete steps 1-4 in the following document from The Tech Interactive at Home:

 https://www.thetech.org/sites/default/files/ttiah-cabbageinks_1.pdf

Follow the instructions using whatever you have available to you at home to create at least 2 different colors of paint. We will create a painting with the paints you have made next week once they have dried.

I can't wait to see what you create!
💜
Melissa
