4/28 Art 6-8

Hello Artists,

This week I want to introduce you to the artist, Marilyn Minter. She is a photographer, painter and a video artist. Minter is also an activist for gender equality and uses art to spread awareness.

Marilyn Minter (born 1948) is an American visual artist who is perhaps best known for her paintings and photographs done in the photorealism style that blur the line between commercial and fine art. Minter currently teaches in the MFA department at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Watch the interview with Marilyn Minter below to learn more about her and her art.

One project that Minter is well known for is a series of photographs of her mother. Minter took pictures to capture everyday moments of her 60 year old mother over a course of time. Study her art below and think about the two following questions:

What stands out to you in these photos?

What do you think Minter was trying to show by taking these photos?

Instructions:
Have you ever watched the daily routines
of your mom or another family member? Think about something you see them do often, and take a picture of them in action. Adjust the color to emphasize the mood.

To celebrate Mother's Day please choose the subject of your photograph to be your mother, stepmother, grandmother, someone that is like a mother to you or someone who cares for you. Get permission to take their photo and share it with them when you are done with the assignment.

This assignment is due by 5/5. Please email your finished work to me at melissaallen@thecottonwoodschool.org.

I can't wait to see what you create!
💜
Melissa
