3/3 Art 7/8

Hello Artists,

This week we will learn about the amazing pop artist, Jason Mecier. Mecier uses candy, food, trash and other interesting items to create large mosaic portraits of celebrities. Read the short bio on Jason Mercier below and then watch the video to learn more about how he creates art.

Jason Mecier was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1968, and is now a practicing artist based in San Francisco. His foray into art originated in his youth, where the early stages of his very distinctive style began to take form. Mecier has never had any formal art training, but was mentored by his Grandmother, also an artist, who inspired Mecier’s use of found objects and his thrifty practice. From her, Mecier also discovered that there are no rules in art – he can create what he wants. His practice has been embedded within craft mediums since his childhood, creating macaroni art in his grandmother’s workspace.

Jason Mecier creates one of a kind outrageous mosaic portraits. He meticulously fabricates anybody out of anything, from Kevin Bacon out of bacon, to Harry Potter out of licorice. Jason’s artwork has been featured everywhere from Entertainment Weekly to The New York Times, on TV shows like Glee, Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, The Today Show and TMZ, as well as music videos by Pink and Pitbull.

Supplies:

-sketchbook or white paper
-pencil

Instructions:

1. After watching the video, study the photos below of some of Jason Mecier's most famous works of art. Look closely and take note at what each might be made of.

2. Today use your sketchbook to brainstorm and sketch ideas for your own artwork inspired by Mecier. You can create a portrait, abstract, landscape...anything really. Get creative! Keep in mind, you will be using small edible items to create your mosaic art next week.

3. After you have made a simple sketch of your idea, think of what materials you will use next week to put together your mosaic. Some suggestions are: dried pasta, cereal or candy (it should be dry food that you can glue down.) Keep your sketch, next week we will start the food mosaics.

*Check with your parents next week before using food for art!
