Hello Artists,
I have a really simple drawing lesson this week that will lay the building blocks for understanding something called perspective, which is a word that is used to describe what you see from where you are. As an artists’ tool, perspective helps us understand what we see from where we sit or stand, and how to draw the objects that we see in a way that someone else can look at our drawing and feel like they are in the same room as we are, looking at the same objects! Perspective is also used to make shapes look three-dimensional.
Today, you will have a simple drawing activity to practice using perspective in art. This activity can be done in your sketchbook using a pencil. You can choose to add color if you would like.
Watch the video above to draw your name in 3D form using a vanishing point. By drawing lines from your original letters back to the perspective point, you're setting up boundaries that show how much smaller your block letters would look if you slid them into the distance. Connecting the lines between your original and distant block letters makes it look like the letters are taking up 3D space. This technique can be used to draw even more complicated 3D objects and scenes - experiment with it and see what happens! You can also use a second perspective point, or shadows, to add even more depth to your drawings.
I can't wait to see what you create!
💜
Melissa
